Lapland Odyssey Review

Last night was the first film for TIFF this year. I saw Lapland Odyssey at AMC 7 and let me just say first it was a good pick. That evening I was trying to decide between a special presentation Passion Play with big stars of this smaller somewhat unknown film at least to our north american market. In the end if figured discovering new smaller films is what TIFF is really about.

The film is really a road movie staring Timo Lavikainen playing ‘Janne’ who has neglected to fulfill a promise to buy is girlfriend a TV converter box. When she threatens to leave him the next morning unless he makes good on his long time promise Janne must find away to get her one. This on a friday night in the dead of a northern Finnish winter. Janne teams up with two other friends to drive into to town to buy her one. Of course things don’t go quite as planned as the trio come across killer lesbians, drunken russians and a wicked winter storm.

Cinematography the whole way is great. The landscape despite always being snow covered is quite beautiful and the night sky shows of some really cool northern lights. On screen chemistry of the trio as well as the rest of the cast is just perfect and there are moments near that end that brought the whole audience to applause. Having both the directory and the producer there was was really nice. This always helps to give you an extra insite into the making of the film and what is great about TIFF in general. The subtitles were always easy to read despite being in white often on snow. They were never too fast though. During the Q&A one person commented that there was some comedy lost if you don’t speak finnish which i will assume is correct. Though i think this is the case with most movies with subtitles. If you’re looking for a movie that is funny and in a bit of a different style than we are used to seeing here you should check this out.

So I found the rush line at the AMC in the middle of the food court. Not the best location really even on s Friday night when the building isn’t busy. After being in the line for about a literal 10 seconds a woman sold me a ticket at a discount. This is why I suggest you carry a little cash when rushing even if you can pay visa at the box office. So I’ll be seeing Lapland odyssey in about an hour. I will report back in an hour with a mini review.
